In 2009 a national analysis put Pensacola dead last for drinking water quality among the country’s hundred largest systems. Sixteen years on, the utility meets federal standards and the headline still follows the city around. Neither fact tells you what is coming out of your tap.

Nothing here does two things at once.

chemicals in Pensacola’s water exceeded a published health guideline — the finding that put the city last among the hundred largest systems in the country.

What the study actually said, and what it did not.

The Environmental Working Group analyzed roughly twenty million water quality tests covering 48,000 communities. Nationally it found 316 contaminants in finished drinking water — and enforceable federal limits for only 114 of them.

Pensacola finished last. But “exceeded a health guideline” is not “broke the law,” the data is from 2004 to 2008, and the methodology drew real criticism at the time. It has since been recycled by water-treatment marketers for a decade and a half with the date carefully removed.

We wrote the whole thing up — the findings, the contaminant list, the counterargument, and where the system stands in the current EWG database — because you should be able to read it without somebody trying to sell you a tank at the end of every paragraph.

There is no version of this where we recommend hardware before we know what is in your water.

    Your utility’s published numbers

    ECUA reports hardness, chlorine residual and detected contaminants every year, broken out by area. It costs nothing to look up and it is where every honest conversation starts.

    A bench test on your own water

    Hardness, TDS, pH, iron, chlorine residual — sampled from your hose bib and your kitchen tap, because the distribution system and your own plumbing both change the water on the way in. Anything beyond that panel goes to a lab and is quoted at cost up front.

    A recommendation the numbers support

    Sometimes that is a $600 under-sink RO and nothing else. Sometimes it is carbon and a softener on an exterior pad. We put the reasoning in writing so you can take it to somebody else if you want a second opinion.

  4. 04

    Install, permit and commission

    We pull the permit where one is required, build the loop with a real bypass, and run the system through its first cycles on site so you are not discovering a drain-line problem at 2am.

Is Pensacola tap water actually safe to drink?

Legal to drink, yes — ECUA reports compliance with federal standards. But several of those standards have not been revised in close to twenty years, and EWG still flags contaminants here above its own health guidelines.

Is the water here hard? I see wildly different numbers.

Because vendors publish whatever supports the sale — we have seen one retailer claim 8.5 gpg on one page and 21 gpg on another. The panhandle is the soft corner of Florida. Plenty of homes here do not need a softener at all.

The salt tank is full but my water is hard again.

Salt bridge. Humidity fuses the top layer into a crust spanning the tank above the water line. Looks full, is hollow underneath, and no brine is being made. Push down with a broom handle until it gives.

Should I do whole-house RO instead of just the kitchen?

Almost certainly not. On municipal water it is the classic overspend. Carbon on the main plus an RO under the kitchen sink does the same job for a fraction of the money and a fraction of the wasted water.
